The musical comedy Searching for Romeo is an original play by University of Wisconsin-Green Bay faculty member Brian Sutton. The play re-imagines the Romeo and Juliet story from the perspective of the story’s “losers.” That is, the central characters in Searching for Romeo are Rosaline and Paris, two minor characters in Shakespeare’s play who are rejected by Romeo and Juliet, respectively. By shifting the focus to the rejected pair, Searching for Romeo questions our society’s image of Romeo and Juliet as ideal romantic lovers. And the experience of Rosaline and Paris is sadly true for many of us: the sense that they’re minor characters in some grander story, that there’s a world of passion and romance out there but somehow reserved for other people. Rosaline and Paris can identify with the words of the old Gershwin song: “They’re writing songs of love, but not for me.” But being the leads in a romantic comedy, Rosaline and Paris achieve something that eludes Romeo and Juliet: a happy ending.
