Mai Wyn Schantz
Oil on aluminum, 2005
Mai Wyn Schantz translates her love of nature and her experiences canoeing in the Boundary Waters area into paintings as rich and luminous as the changing landscapes she captures.
In work that pursues balance in both structure and meaning, Schantz negotiates seemingly opposing forces: horizons stretching into the distance held in check by an impenetrable frame, natural light playing across water juxtaposed with the sheen of industrial metal.
Schantz has been pioneering the process of painting on aluminum. She works all aspects of the metal herself, cutting and bending a large sheet to fit a traditional wooden support. In order for the oil paints to adhere to the smooth metal surface, Schantz first primes the area with industrial paints.
