Our designers and cast have worked on Broadway and in many of the most prestigious regional houses, so the process has been a joy. We are transforming the space in Fort Howard Hall to bring a taste of that intimate, charged experience that Chicago theatre is known for.”

John Mellencamp’s career in music, spanning more than 35 years, has seen him transition from pop star to one of the most highly respected singer/songwriters of a generation.  Mellencamp is incredibly acclaimed; he is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a Grammy winner, a recipient of the John Steinbeck Award, ASCAP Foundation’s Champion Award, The Woody Guthrie Award and Americana Music Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award and more recently, the Founders Award, the top honor assigned by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.  Additionally, he was recently inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame this past June. He is also one of the most successful live concert performers in the world.   In 1985,  Mellencamp, together with Willie Nelson and Neil Young, created Farm Aid. The social activism reflected in his songs helped catalyze Farm Aid, the concert series and organization that has addressed the struggle of American family farmers for more than 25 years.

As well, John journeyed  into the darkness of coal mining life in his reverent cover of Merle Travis’ 1946 song “Dark as a Dungeon,” recorded in support of National Geographic’s acclaimed documentary about the mining industry, “From The Ashes,” produced by Michael Bloomberg, former NYC Mayor.

John continues to focus on another facet of his artistic expression: painting. His style has progressed over the years as evidenced by several gallery shows and published portfolios, and in recent years he has increased his output by completing over 100 new works. He had his second solo exhibition this past Spring in New York and has a current exhibit at the famed Butler Museum in Youngstown, Ohio from September 20th through November 18th.   His highly successful Rock and Roll Hall of Fame exhibit ran for nearly two years and is now at the Woodie Guthrie Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma from September 1st through January 5, 2019.

Mellencamp continues his journey as the walking embodiment of rock icon; passionate, plain-spoken, and a self-proclaimed rebel.  John Mellencamp continues to live and work in Bloomington, Indiana.

The Weidner Center Celebrates “Homecomings” for the 25th Anniversary Concert

August 6, 2018

The Weidner Center for the Performing Arts celebrates its 25th Anniversary Season with a homecoming of talented performers on Saturday, September 22, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. The 25th Anniversary Concert will feature Wayne Lin, Brad Little, Jessica Tyler Wright, the Youth Symphony Orchestra at St. Norbert and the Weidner Anniversary Orchestra. Tickets for this event can be purchased at www.WeiderCenter.com, by phone at 800-895-0071 or in person at the Ticket Star Box Office at the Resch Center (1901 S. Oneida St., Green Bay, Wis.).

When discussing the Silver Celebration, Executive and Artistic Director, Kelli Strickland says, “Anniversaries are a time to reflect and celebrate. With over 4 million event attendees and 9,000 events to our credit, there is much to both reflect upon and celebrate. That is why we are so pleased to have these accomplished artists who are a part of the Weidner’s history join us in this night of performances. It is especially important to have the young artists of our region play a role in our celebration to remind us that our arts and culture centers cultivate generations of artists and arts lovers. Two of our very accomplished soloists are alumni of the Youth Symphony. Anniversaries are also a time to renew one’s energy and commitment to the future. Cultural centers are not just buildings, they are the people that fill them. And their impact is woven throughout the fabric of a community. We look forward to continuing that tradition for the next 25 years.”

As we look back, we reflect on the opening of the Weidner Center. The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay’s first Chancellor Dr. Edward Weidner was quoted, “We thought a performing arts center would present valuable opportunities for the students and faculty of the University. More broadly, we thought that the Weidner Center would enrich the quality of life in Green Bay and the surrounding communities.”

The Weidner Center welcomes home Green Bay native, Wayne Lin. In 1993, 11-year-old violinist Wayne Lin performed at the inaugural event hosted by Beverly Sills. Lin has studied at Julliard and Yale, and he frequently served as concertmaster of the Juilliard Orchestra and Yale Philharmonia. He has appeared as a soloist with the orchestras of Milwaukee, Green Bay and the Fox Valley as well as the Chengdu Symphony in China, the Sudecka Philharmonic in Poland, and the Mirtinu and Hradac Králové Philharmonics in the Czech Republic. Lin is currently the Associate Concertmaster of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra.

Performer Brad Little, who made the Green Bay area home while he enchanted patrons at the Weidner Center in 1997 and 1999 as the titular character in The Phantom of the Opera, returns to the Weidner Center in this concert event. Other Broadway and tour credits include: Les Misérables, Anything Goes, Fiddler on the Roof, West Side Story, Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita and many more. After theatre success, Little began a solo career with many symphony orchestras around the world where he produced and starred in many concerts.  His first solo concert was with the Green Bay Symphony Orchestra under Maestro Donald Pippin and a return visit the very next year. Having performed in the United States, Asia, and Europe, Little has a very wide global reach and will make an appearance in Green Bay once again for one night only.

Jessica Tyler Wright made her Broadway debut in the revival of Sweeney Todd, has performed in War Horse and many other Broadway and Off-Broadway productions. She was also nominated for a Lucille Lortel award for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical for her performance as Marjorie Taylor in Classic Stage Company’s production of Allegro. Wright is a proud native of Green Bay and began her theatre career at age 11 when she played Annie at the Theatre on the Bay. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre and a Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance, both from Millikin University.

The Weidner Anniversary Orchestra will be conducted by Beverly Taylor, Associate Conductor from Madison Symphony, with Concertmaster Audrey Novak. The Youth Symphony at St. Norbert College will be directed by Mike Ross. The night will be filled with lush orchestral repertoire and Broadway favorites played by old and new friends.

A pre-concert dinner event is also announced. This dinner event will start at 6:00 p.m., doors open at 5:30 p.m. The dinner menu is as follows: a classic Caesar salad with shaved asiago & basil croutons with an entree choice of brown sugar salmon fillet, choice tenderloin steak or roasted vegetable strudel. All selections come with whipped savory sweet potatoes with roasted parsnips and carrots. Dessert will follow and feature an individual chocolate soufflé cake with fresh vanilla bean cream and fresh berries. The Weidner Center is proud to partner with The Runaway Spoon on this celebration dinner. Speaker nominations and applications are being accepted June 1 – June 20. The Weidner Center seeks the boldest and most impactful ideas being generated in this community.  The first event will take place November 1, 2018. To apply or nominate a speaker, visit www.tedxuwgreenbay.com.

Regan Gurung, Professor of Human Development and Psychology, discusses his excitement for the event; “TEDx Talks present one of the very best ways to reach people at every level of the community regardless of their gender, ethnicity, age or economic status. Especially as someone who has given a TEDx Talk, the opportunity to help showcase Green Bay’s best ideas on the UW-Green Bay campus is enthralling and energizing. Get ready for great stuff, Green Bay!”

Executive and Artistic Director of the Weidner Center, Kelli Strickland, states the Weidner Center is thrilled to produce Green Bay’s first TEDx event. “As a cultural center, we are committed to shining a light on Green Bay’s most exciting ideas,” Strickland says. “It will be interesting to learn through the speaker application and nomination process who the community is most interested in hearing from.” Chuck Rybak, dean, College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences shares his enthusiasm about TEDxUW-Green Bay; “UW-Green Bay strives to deliver knowledge and ideas to our community in as many forms and venues as possible. TedxUW-Green Bay, with its innovative format and timely subject matter, promises to be a forum that is both accessible and provocative.”

About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

Weidner Center Announces Silver Celebration and Vision for the Next 25 Years

May 24, 2018

(Green Bay, WI) Finger snapping jazz, thought provoking discoveries, toe-tapping musicals, jaw-dropping spectacles, soaring symphonies and Green Bay legends on stage…there is absolutely something for everyone. In honor of the Weidner Center’s 25th Anniversary, the 2018 – 2019 line-up features titles, concerts and speakers that are meant to fully meet our mission: to delight, educate, inspire and entertain.

“Twenty-five years is an important milestone. And it is falling during an exciting and energetic time in Green Bay and the surrounding areas. So we asked the question, ‘What can the arts and culture add to this energy and momentum?’” remarks Executive and Artistic Director, Kelli Strickland. “Cofrin Family Hall is the only state-of-the-art facility of its kind in our region. So we will celebrate that with song, stories and ideas. But we will do more than that.”

“We don’t want to be viewed as an added bonus to the community and university, but as a vital component. I think you’ll see more collaborations, titles that are produced specifically for our community, speakers and art that push the conversations of discovery and innovation. Our 25th year is a new chapter of cultural citizenship for the Weidner Center.”

The 25th Anniversary Season launches with a look back to the inaugural event held in Cofrin Family Hall on January 15, 1993. One of the performers that evening was Wayne Lin, an 11 year-old violinist and featured performer of the Youth Orchestra. After completing his bachelor’s degree from the Juilliard School and his Master’s degree at Yale School of Music, Lin is now the associate and acting Concertmaster of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra. Lin returns this fall to the Weidner Stage as a soloist in the opening Anniversary Symphony Orchestra Concert Event, September 22.

THE GRINCH is coming to steal Christmas in Green Bay!

May 22, 2018

Broadway’s #1 Holiday hit comes to the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts NOVEMBER 17 – 18, 2018

Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical at the Weidner Center for the  Performing  Arts  November  17-18,  2018.  Hailed  by  The New York Times as “100 times better than any bedtime story,” this classic holiday musical will enchant adults and children alike. Tickets will go on sale to the general public at 11am on June 1, 2018 at WeidnerCenter.com, 800-895-0071, and all Ticket Star locations.

THE GRINCH broke box office records for two consecutive years on Broadway during    its holiday engagements at the St. James and Hilton theaters in New York. More than 2.1 million theater-goers across America have been delighted by this heart warming holiday musical, which the Gannett papers hailed as “A genius of a show! A total delight for both kids and adults.”

Audiences will discover the magic of Dr. Seuss’ classic holiday tale as it comes to life   live on stage. Featuring the hit songs  “You’re  A  Mean  One,  Mr.  Grinch”  and “Welcome Christmas,” THE GRINCH discovers there’s more to Christmas than he bargained for in this heart-warming holiday classic. Max the  Dog  narrates  as  the  mean and scheming GRINCH, whose heart is “two sizes too small,” decides to steal Christmas away from the holiday-loving Whos.

Dr.  Seuss’  How  The  Grinch  Stole  Christmas!  The  Musical  features  magnificent   sets  designed by John Lee Beatty and costumes designed by Robert Morgan, inspired  by Dr. Seuss’ original book. Mel Marvin and Timothy Mason’s music and book breathe new life into this timeless story.

The 2018 production is directed by Matt August and choreographed by Bob Richard, based on the original choreography by John DeLuca and originally created by three-time Tony Award®-winning director, Jack O’Brien.

Sebastian Maniscalco Makes a Stop in Green Bay

May 14, 2018

A string of record-breaking sold out comedy appearances, a top-ranked show on SiriusXM, “The Pete & Sebastian Show,” and inclusion on Forbes’ 2017’s “The World’s Highest Paid Comedians” who praised, “thanks to his enthusiasm and willingness to work, Maniscalco will likely continue to be on Forbes’ list for years to come,” comedian Sebastian Maniscalco is having an incredible year. People Magazine’s “The people’s comedian” is hitting the road and makes his stop at the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at 7pm. Tickets go on sale for Sebastian Maniscalco’s Stay Hungry 2018, tour stop in Green Bay, to the general public on Friday, May 18 at 11am online at sebastianlive.com, WeidnerCenter.com, TicketStarOnline.com, by calling 800-895-0071 and in person at Ticket Star locations.

The tour title is appropriate as not only is “Stay Hungry” the name of his forthcoming 2018 book for Simon & Schuster, but it is also his personal motto.

“The Stay Hungry tour marks the release of my book while I also venture into this new chapter of my life: being a dad. Lately, I’ve found myself reflecting on my path and all of the hard work it has taken to get to this point in my career. I hope to one day pass these values on to my daughter and encourage her to stay hungry for more,” shares Maniscalco, who has expanded his major motion picture portfolio to include a voice-over for character Johnny the Groundhog in the animated feature “Nut Job 2” and appearances in films including the Will Ferrell-starring New Line Feature comedy “The House” and a role in 2018’s “TAG,” starring alongside Ed Helms and Jeremy Renner.

Dubbed “one of the hottest comics” by Newsday and “one of the funniest comics working stand-up today” by Esquire, Sebastian’s live performance has become a critically-acclaimed event, with the Los Angeles Times raving, “onstage, there’s an impatience to Maniscalco’s delivery as well, a hair-trigger exasperation with people and modern life, punctuated with baffled expressions, percussive thumps on the microphone and wide-swung leg kicks more associated with an Olympic speed-skater than a stand-up comic.”

Instead of asking questions – a theme that has served as the foundation of his previous comedy specials and shows like Aren’t You Embarrassed? and Why Would You Do That? – Maniscalco’s new tour has the affable performer instead encouraging fans to follow in his footsteps and “stay hungry.”

Shares the man The New York Times raved for his “own kind of panache,” “Even though I’ve achieved some success, I will always stay hungry for more.”

January 22, 2018

Everyone has a story to tell. As the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts enters its 25th season, with more than 4 million attendees and 9,000 events, the Weidner Center wants to hear from patrons past and present at #MyWeidnerMoment about the moments that have left an indelible mark on their lives.

The campaign kicks off with a call to the community from the Weidner Center’s Executive and Artistic Director, Kelli Strickland. “In my first few months I’ve heard fabulous stories from guests about their moments here at the Weidner,” says Strickland. “Some are romantic, others are hilarious. What’s great is that so many people in Northeast Wisconsin have a story about how this beautiful venue has touched their lives. There’s no better time than our 25th anniversary year to share these moments and that magic.”

Strickland will kick off the campaign by sharing her own #MyWeidnerMoment in the weeks ahead.

The Weidner Center for the Performing Arts officially opened on January 15, 1993. The idea of having a center for the performing arts in Green Bay had been a long-held dream for many members of the community, including UW-Green Bay’s founding Chancellor, Edward W. Weidner. Local patrons, Dr. David Cofrin and Mary Ann Cofrin, made a significant pledge to the planning and construction of the new facility under the stipulations that it be located on the UW-Green Bay campus, serve the entire community and be named in honor of Chancellor Emeritus Weidner. With extensive fundraising and perseverance, the dream became a reality and continues today as a breathtaking and acoustically superior facility in Wisconsin and a precious community and campus resource.

The medleys feature a wide array of legendary songs including hits by ABBA, Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, Tina Turner, Chubby Checker, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Prince, Bon Jovi, and many others. The “jump out and grab you show” is accompanied by three larger than life screens and visuals that instantly transport viewers to each decade with images from that era’s headlines and pop-culture.

Decades Rewind was created by the show’s keyboardist, Peter Gatti, and drummer, Mark Blinkhorn. Gatti said, “Decades Rewind was designed to whisk our audiences back to the days of their best memories. Guests always tell us that they remembered their first dance, their first kiss, their first love during our shows. Music is so powerful and it’s really amazing to see how people are moved throughout the performance.” What was your first dance move? The twist? The hustle? The robot? When you come to a Decades Rewind show, you have to bring your dancing shoes!

With over 100 costume changes, 10 medleys featuring 60 songs, Decades Rewind is an unparalleled, interactive multimedia musical experience that will have you rockin’ in your seat, dancing in the aisle, and singing along with every word. This show really does let you turn back the hands of time because this IS the music of your life!
